Born in Saint Petersburg, he studied violin and composition there before continuing his studies at the Juilliard School with Itzhak Perlman. In 1998, he won the Premio Paganini, becoming the youngest winner in the competition’s history.
Gringolts is a professor at the Zurich University of the Arts, teaches at the Accademia Chigiana, and serves as artistic advisor to the Mizmorim Festival. He performs on a 1718 Stradivari violin (“ex-Prové”).
